WSU completes sweep of Ducks

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State swept Oregon in their Pac-10 Conference series with a 10-2 win Monday,

WSU is 25-20, 14-7 in the Pac-10. Oregon (14-34, 4-17) has lost five straight.

Left-hander David Stilley improved to 3-1 on the season, allowing six hits over six innings.

Madison Boer (1-7) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings on the mound.

The Cougars scored 10 runs on 13 hits by putting together four-run innings in the third and the fifth.

Jared Prince was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead WSU, while Greg Lagreid was 2-for-3 on the day, picking up his 10th and 11th doubles of the season. Derek Jones was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Ryan Peterson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

For Oregon, freshman Darrell Hunter was 2-for-4 on the day with his third double of the season, while junior Jett Hart hit 2-for-2 with an RBI single and two stolen bases, increasing his total to 10 for the year.

Washington State again took an early lead over Oregon as five singles and one hit batter led to four runs for the Cougars in the bottom of the third. All four runs were surrendered by Boer before he was relieved by freshman righty Alex Keudell.

The Ducks responded to cut WSU's four-run lead in half during the top of the fifth. Back-to-back hits to lead off the inning paid dividends as Antony Kreitz lined his fourth double of the season off the right field wall. Mitch Karraker then sent an RBI single to shallow left, scoring Kreitz for the Ducks first run of the game. Stilley retired the next two Oregon batters, but Karraker moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, and Hart connected on a two-out RBI single into center field as Karraker scored bringing the score to within 4-2.

But the Cougars regained those two runs plus some in the bottom of the fifth. Five hits, including two doubles, led to a second four-run inning for WSU as the Cougars mounted an 8-2 lead. Back-to-back hits to lead off the fifth set up Prince's RBI single, while Michael Weber's sacrifice fly scored the inning's second run. Jay Ponciano added a one-run double into the left center gap and Peterson came through with a one-run single for WSU's eighth run of the game.

Washington State added two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Lagreid scored from third on an error on a failed pickoff attempt, and Prince crossed the plate on Peterson's RBI double.

Oregon returns to action for a three-game series at Arizona State on Friday. The Sun Devils currently lead the Pac-10 with a 16-5 conference record (38-11 overall) and are the third-ranked team in the country after sweeping Winthrop in a three-game non-conference series over the weekend.
