Beavers blank Ducks in Civil War contest
CORVALLIS — Tyler Waldron and two relievers combined on a five-hitter to lead Oregon State to a 2-0 win over Oregon on Tuesday, giving coach Pat Casey his 500th career victory.
Waldron (5-3) fanned 10 Ducks before exiting with one out in the eighth inning. Kevin Rhoderick pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save.
John Wallace's RBI double put the Beavers ahead in the second inning, and Rob Folsom's single scored Wallace in the fifth. With the hit, Folsom extended his hitting streak to four games and now has 15 RBIs this season.
The win makes Casey 500-311-4 at Oregon State in his career. He has led the Beavers to at least 30 wins in 10 of his 15 seasons at Oregon State in addition to national championships in 2006 and 2007. Casey earned his first victory at Oregon State with a 4-3 win over Western Oregon on Feb. 22, 1995.
He is now one of three OSU coaches to win at least 500 in their tenure with the Beavers. Jack Riley won 613 from 1973-94 and Ralph Coleman won 561 in four different stints from 1923-66.
Making his second consecutive Tuesday start, Waldron was dominant while improving his record to 5-3. The righty struck out a career-high 10, including striking out the side in the second inning. Waldron retired 15 consecutive Oregon hitters from the third until the eighth inning.
Over the last two starts, Waldron has struck out 18 hitters in 161/3 innings.
Alex Keudell picked up the loss to drop to 0-5 this season. He allowed four hits and two runs in eight innings of work.
The Beavers (32-16) and Ducks (14-38) meet today at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer.
