Raiders sweep Owls

KLAMATH FALLS — The 16th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team won its fifth straight match with a 25-19, 25-15, 28-18 sweep of rival Oregon Tech Friday night.

Sophomore Sarah Holgen and junior Leah Bergstrom were both perfect on the night. Holgen had nine kills and no errors, and Bergstrom finished with eight kills and no errors. Leanne Stennett had seven kills and 11 digs.

The setting combination of Angela Spieker and Caryn Westrick were equally impressive. Spieker handed out 46 assists and Westrick had 37.

The Raiders improved to 14-2 overall and 8-1 in Cascade Conference play. Oregon Tech dropped to 4-13 overall and 3-6 in conference action.

Southern Oregon has won 12 straight over the Owls and 20 of the last 21 matchups.

The victory sets up a titanic matchup next Friday with seventh-ranked College of Idaho in Ashland.

COLLEGE OF IDAHO 1, SOU 0 — At Ashland, Taylor Culver's second half goal allowed College of Idaho to remain perfect in Cascade Conference play after the win at University Field.

After a scoreless first half, Culver put the Coyotes on the board with a goal from 10 yards out at the 66 minute mark off an assist by Jamie Reichel. The ball barely got past Jessica Kuehlwein, SOU's diving goalie.

After the Coyotes outshot the Raiders 11-3 in the first half, Southern Oregon came out as the aggressive team to start the second half and finished the half with a 4-3 shot advantage.

Erica Mouritsen, the conference's leading goal scorer, was held scoreless but finished with five shots and three shots on goal for the Coyotes.

Kuehlwein finished with seven saves for the Raiders, while Alexis Mahoney, Stephanie Carr and Mo Costello all had shots on goal for the Raiders.

College of Idaho improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in conference matches.

Southern Oregon dropped to 2-7-1 overall and 0-2 in conference.

The Raiders host Eastern Oregon today at 3 p.m.
