Powell, Raiders net fourth-straight victory

ASHLAND — Denise Powell had two second half goals as the Southern Oregon University women's soccer team picked up its fourth-straight victory, 2-0, over Warner Pacific today at University Field.

Powell got the Raiders on the board at the 47-minute mark off a pass from Renay Norman.

At the 81 minute mark, Powell again found the back of the net, this one on a pass through the box by Stephanie Carr.

"Denise got a pair of great opportunistic goals today," said SOU head coach Jon Clement. "Her run selection was really good today."

The SOU defense limited Warner Pacific (1-9-3, 1-4-1 Cascade Collegiate Conference) to nine total shots, three of which were on goal and saved by freshman goalkeeper Catherine Savitch, who made her first career. SOU now has four shutouts in a row.

Powell accounted for five of the Raiders' nine shots on goal. Sara Switzer, Auika Muragin, Lauren Maserjian and Renay Norman all shots on goal for SOU, which hosts fifth-ranked Concordia today at 3 p.m.


SOUTHERN OREGON 3, CONCORDIA 0 — At Portland, although illness left Southern Oregon shorthanded, the 12-th ranked squad still managed to pull off a 25-20, 25-17, 25-15 victory over Concordia.

The Raiders' Sarah Holgen had 11 kills and Natalie Scheller added a career-high 10 kills. As a team, the Raiders (17-2, 11-1 CCC) hit .386.

Angela Spieker had 17 assists and Caryn Westrick had 16 assists for the Raiders, who were without a number of players, their head coach and assistant coach.

Concordia jumped out to a 7-2 lead before SOU came back with a 9-2 to run to take the lead in the first game. Later, with the set knotted at 18-all, Scheller went off for three kills, allowin the Raiders to take control.

Mariana Toscano led Concordia (11-7, 8-3 CCC) with 10 kills.
