Speer scores 34 to lead Raiders in season opener

Southern Oregon senior Jacki Speer went for 34 points as the 18th-ranked Raiders scored a 73-70 victory over Holy Names Friday in Oakland, Calif.

With the 34 points, the All-American moved ahead of Nicole Whitney for fifth all-time in SOU scoring. Speer also had 12 rebounds on the night.

Gabe Johnson finished with 13 points and Emily Brookins had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Men's basketball

FRESNO PACIFIC 75, SOUTHERN OREGON 59 — At Fresno, Calif., fresno Pacific forced 25 Southern Oregon turnovers in the win.

Senior Ryan Staker turned in a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Staker went 7-for-14 from the field, but just 2-for-6 from the free throw line. Humphrey Jackson added 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting and David Grant had 11 points.


SOU SWEEPS — At Olympia, Wash., the 12th-ranked Southern Oregon volleyball team extended their winning streak to 13 with a 25-16, 25-3, 25-14 victory over Evergreen State.

Junior Leah Bergstrom led SOU with 11 kills and a .667 attach percentage, and Heather Porter had 10 kills and a .600 attack percentage. Becky Johnstone had a match-high 13 digs and Angela Spieker had 19 assists, five digs and one ace.

The Raiders put the match away in the second set by hitting .625 and holding Evergreen to a -.152 attack percentage. As a team, SOU hit .463 as a team and held the Geoducks to a -.023 attack percentage.

Southern Oregon improved to 22-2 overall and 16-1 in conference play. The Raiders will play for at least a share of the Cascade Conference title tonight at Northwest. Evergreen State fell to 1-25 overall and 1-16 in conference play.
