Sim's 19 sparks Ducks in blowout
EUGENE — Oregon guard Garrett Sim had 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Ducks in a 79-51 victory against Mississippi Valley State Wednesday night.
Sim, making his first start of the season, made 5 of 9 3-pointers and was 6 of 12 from the field overall. Jamil Wilson also scored 12 points for the Ducks (5-4) and Jeremy Jacobs had 11 points.
Sim, who started 26 games at point guard as a freshman last season, was part of a new-look Oregon lineup against the Delta Devils.
The Ducks opened the game with their top three scorers on the bench. Guard LeKendric Longmire missed his first start of the season and guard Teondre Williams sat for the first time in seven games due to academics.
Meanwhile, Tajuan Porter didn't play for the third time in four games because of an injured ankle.
Illinois-Chicago 63, Oregon 61
At Chicago, six-footer Robo Kreps scored on a drive to the basket over 6-foot-11 center Roeland Schaftenaar with 5.6 seconds to play, rallying Illinois-Chicago to an upset win.
Schaftenaar's layup gave Oregon State a 61-58 lead with 50.9 seconds left. After Brad Birton's basket pulled the Flames within a point, the Beavers (4-5) threw away the inbounds pass with 21.8 seconds to go.
Kreps then spotted an opening on the right side, drove in against Schaftenaar and scored for a 62-61 lead. Josh Tarver's inbounds pass was intercepted by Neely, who made one of two free throws. Birton picked off Tarver's next inbounds pass to seal the victory.
