Beavers continue offensive onslaught

TEMPE, Ariz. — The second-ranked Oregon State baseball team scored early and often in a 14-6 win over Pacific Sunday afternoon at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

OSU (3-0) scored in the first and at one point was tied with Pacific at 1-1 in the second, but the Beavers reeled off four consecutive innings with at least two runs. This included a three-run third inning that was highlighted by Michael Conforto's two-run single.

OSU pushed the lead to 8-1 with a four-run fourth in which Conforto and Dylan Davis were each credited with runs driven in. Jeff Hendrix added to the lead in the fifth with a two-run double, and after the team's half of the sixth, had pushed the lead to 13-2, plenty of cushion for starter Scott Schultz.

Conforto, Davis and Hendrix provided plenty of offense for the Beavers as the trio combined to go 5-for-9 with 10 RBIs and five walks, three of which were issued to Hendrix. Conforto tallied five RBIs on the day on the strength of three hits, including two doubles.

OREGON 6, HAWAII 5, 10 inn. — At Honolulu, Oregon rallied from a two-run ninth inning deficit with a pair of runs and then took advantage of a Hawaii error to claim victory.

Oregon (3-0) got three consecutive pinch hits with one out to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning. Senior Connor Hofmann started the rally with a single to left field and then scored on an RBI double by A.J. Balta to pull the Ducks within one run, 5-4. Balta's run-scoring pinch hit was his second in as many days. The freshman broke up a 5-5 tie on Saturday with a two-run single to help push Oregon to a 10-5 win.

Junior J.B. Bryant drove in Balta with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game and force extra innings.

In the 10th inning, the Ducks loaded the bases after the first three batters reached base. Senior Aaron Payne was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and senior Tyler Baumgartner walked. Sophomore Mitchell Tolman laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached base on a throwing error by Hawaii pitcher Jordan DuPonte to load the bases.

After two outs, Baumgartner scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Hawaii shortstop Austin Wobrock on a ground ball hit by Hofmann.
