SOU slams Simpson for 40-8 dual win

REDDING, Calif. — The second-ranked Southern Oregon wrestling team scored bonus points in seven of the eight bouts that went its way Wednesday night, defeating No. 15 Simpson 40-8 at the Heritage Student Life Center.

The Raiders (3-1) got first-round pins from 125-pounder Casey Coulter, 197-pounder Ryan McWatters and heavyweight Clayton Burtis against the Redhawks. Tyler Cowger won by fall in the second period of his 149-pound match.

Devin Poppen won with a technical-fall shutout at 133 pounds, Garrett Urrutia scored an 11-0 major decision at 165 and Jacob Abrams was an 11-2 winner by major decision at 184. Reed Tennyson, filling in for Brock Gutches at 174, eked out a 3-2 decision over Matthew Tsarnas.

Burtis was the first to wrestle for SOU, taking down Augie Alcantar in 2:15 before Coulter finished off Ty Young in a minute flat. Poppen’s 16-0 win against Fabian Auiglera was next, giving SOU an initial 17-0 lead.

AJ Valles claimed Simpson’s first victory by technical fall at 141, but Cowger came back with a pin of Blaine Lindahl. Simpson’s Richard Ortiz won the 157-pound bout by decision before the Raiders took the last four classes.

SOU, which was in action for the first time since Nov. 22, returns home today for the Doc Welton Classic inside Riehm Arena. After Warner Pacific takes on third-ranked Montana State-Northern at 3 p.m., the Raiders get Warner Pacific at 5 p.m. and Northern at 7 p.m.
