Gems cruise past Rogues
Two big innings proved to be the Medford Rogues’ undoing in a nonconference baseball game Thursday against the Klamath Falls Gems at Harry & David Field.
Klamath Falls scored four runs in the top of the third inning on three hits and two Rogues errors and tacked on three more in the top of the ninth on three hits and another key error to pull away for an 8-1 victory.
The two teams are set to meet for a three-game series in West Coast League play beginning Monday. Prior to that, Medford, which went 0-4 in the preseason, opens WCL play tonight at the Walla Walla Sweets.
Klamath Falls broke the game open by loading the bases against Medford starter Connor Mattison in the third inning. After Kody Reynolds drew a walk to plate the first run, two runs scored on a wild pitch and ensuing error and then the Gems capped the scoring with an RBI single by Patrick McClure.
After Klamath Falls built its advantage to 5-0 in the fifth inning, Medford was able to scratch out a run in its half of the fifth behind a leadoff single from Brice Tilton. After a sacrifice bunt by Brock Pradere, Derron Davis singled to put runners on the corners and then Tilton scored on an error.
Mattison allowed three hits and one earned run in three innings, with two walks and three strikeouts.
Tony Roque and Tilton each finished 2-for-3 to pace Medford. For Klamath Falls, Jacob Bennett scored three times and Reynolds had two RBIs.
