Merced hands Raiders 2OT loss
MERCED, Calif. — Claudia Diaz's golden goal in the 108thminute gave University of California, Merced a 1-0 double-overtime victory over the Southern Oregon women's soccer team in triple-digit temperatures Wednesday afternoon.
The Raiders (1-3-2) became Merced's fifth straight shutout victim to start the season. The Bobcats improved to 4-0-1.
SOU keeper Kylie Moltzen kept them off the board with 11 saves until Diaz, off an assist by Veronica Villacorta, put a one-timer into the back of the net. Merced had a 16-9 advantage in shots but a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Maggie Morales was credited with the shutout. She's helped the Bobcats outscore their opponents, including three Cascade Conference teams, 10-0 this season.
The Raiders were playing their second double-overtime contest of the season. The first two ended in draws.
They'll attempt to regroup for CCC play, beginning Friday at College of Idaho and Sunday at Rocky Mountain (Mont.).
