Martin, Sierra score 20 as No. 10 SOU rolls
ASHLAND — The 10th-ranked Southern Oregon men's basketball team was finally afforded a comfortable Cascade Conference win Wednesday night, riding career-best 20-point nights from Justin Martin and Clay Sierra to a 97-71 rout of Multnomah at Ashland High.
The Raiders improved to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the CCC. They host Warner Pacific at 7:30 tonight at Ashland High. Multnomah went to 4-9 and 1-4.
SOU sank 12 3-pointers, led by Martin's 6-for-10 effort. Martin is a junior from Central Point. Sierra went 10-for-12 from the field and added nine rebounds, helping the Raiders to a 50-26 advantage in the paint. They shot 52 percent (40-for-77) as a team.
Jordan Paris scored 17 and Ben Grandle added 15 for the Lions, who went 11-for-30 from 3-point range.
SOU 98, MULTNOMAH 51: At Ashland, Carly Meister tallied 18 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks for her first double-double of the season, and 13th-ranked Southern Oregon never trailed at Mountain Avenue Gym.
Four others scored in double figures for the Raiders (12-0 overall, 5-0 Cascade Conference) in their first-ever meeting with the Lions: Sydney Mullings (16 points, seven rebounds), Ashley Claussen (13 points, five steals, four assists), Tiani Bradford (10 points, four steals) and Toria Bradford (10 points, four steals).
SOU led 32-14 by the end of the first quarter and held the Lions to 28-percent shooting (17-of-61) on the night. The Raiders had advantages of 56-12 in the paint, 36-13 in points off turnovers, 29-13 on second-chance buckets on 26-0 in transition.
Multnomah (3-10, 1-4) was led by Karissa Cox's 13 points and four rebounds off the bench.
SOU hosts Warner Pacific at 5:30 p.m. today at Ashland High.
