No. 15 Raiders fall at Simon Fraser
BURNABY, B.C. — The Simon Fraser Clan men's wrestling team took five of seven contests Sunday and got some payback on Southern Oregon with a 23-20 dual victory.
SOU 125-pounder Casey Coulter and 157-pounder Hunter Hodges both claimed major decisions, but the Raiders' only other points were scored on two SFU forfeits. Their dual record went to 7-2.
The Clan had lost a Dec. 17 matchup at SOU, 35-17, but got in front Sunday with decisions in the first two bouts for Josh Kim (197) and Sean Molle (285). Coulter then got SOU on the board with a 9-0 defeat of Oscar Bulaqui, but Cruz Velasquez got four points back for the Clan with a 14-1 win over Matt Peterson.
SFU forfeited the next two classes, 141 and 149, and Hodges worked a 12-4 win against Tanner Spray to put the Raiders up 20-10.
At 165, SFU's Tyler McLean scored a 12-1 major win over C.J. McKinnis, and 174-pounder Alexander Berfanger nipped Oscar Flores, 3-2. An SOU forfeit at 184 pounds accounted for the go-ahead points.
The win was SFU's first against the Raiders since Jan. 27, 2011.
SOU will face Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Salem's Sprague High.
