North falls to West Salem in OT

SALEM — The overtime period has been a place of comfort for the North Medford girls basketball team all season, with the Black Tornado boasting a 4-0 record in games that went to an extra session heading into Tuesday’s Class 6A first round state playoff at West Salem.

While North Medford’s gritty nature to battle to the end was there again for the road clash, the results just weren’t this time around as the host Titans secured a 58-55 overtime victory to end the Tornado’s season.

It was the second win for 15th-seeded West Salem over 18th-seeded North Medford (17-8) this season, with the Titans (17-8) earning a 57-45 win on Dec. 28.

“Obviously I’m very proud of our effort and how the girls compete and don’t ever quit,” said North Medford head coach Tim Karrick. “Those are good traits to have. I’m not happy we didn’t pull it out tonight but they’ve been doing it all year.”

Sophomore post Megan Fossen had 15 points and eight rebounds to pace North Medford, which finished third in the Southwest Conference.

Junior post Savannah Bumgardner added 14 points and sophomore guard Maggie Freeman scored 13 before fouling out in the final seconds of overtime. Sophomore Rylee Karrick also had 11 points and was only slightly off in her last-gasp 25-footer to potentially send the game into a second overtime.

“We had our chances for sure,” said Karrick, whose team battled back from a seven-point halftime deficit. “We had some good looks, we just didn’t take care of the ball in the few possessions in overtime. We actually had the lead twice but didn’t handle the ball well enough.”

North Medford tied the game at 50-all with 1:40 to play and, after a defensive stop, had the ball and 1:24 on the clock following a timeout. The Tornado’s plan to be patient, however, didn’t work as planned as the girls worked the clock down to the end but were not able to get a shot off in regulation.

Both teams traded buckets to open the overtime but then it became a foul-shooting contest, with West Salem netting 6 of 11 attempts while North Medford hit 3 of 6.

Brenna Redman had 18 points and Delaney Henery scored 15 to pace West Salem, which will play at South Medford in Friday’s second round with a state tournament berth on the line.
