Former SOU star Nugent gets Hall nod
Former Southern Oregon University All-American Larry Nugent will be among eight Oregonians inducted into the state chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame later this month.
Nugent was a national placer for the Raiders in both 1978 and '79. His 1978 third-place finish helped Southern Oregon win the NAIA national championship.
Nugent just completed his first year as head coach of Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. Prior to that he spent 16 years working for the national governing body at USA Wrestling.
Previous coaching assignments included 13 years as an assistant at Southern Oregon, three years as head coach at Pacific University in Forest Grove and three years as an assistant for Brigham Young University.
Others being honored include lifetime contributors Dale Freeman of Pendleton; Rich Rolen, coach at both The Dalles and Oregon City; Ron and Laurice Ochs, founders and sponsors of the Madras tournament; and Doug Caffall, longtime Newberg coach.
Dr. Mike Reuter, former University of Oregon coach and highly-decorated World War II veteran, will be recognized with the Hall’s Medal of Courage. Aeronautic engineer and inventor Denys Overholser, a former Oregon State wrestler, will be given the Outstanding American award.
