Beavers even Civil War series
CORVALLIS — KJ Harrison hit his ninth home run of the season to help send 24th-ranked Oregon State to a Civil War series-evening 6-3 win over Oregon Saturday night at Goss Stadium.
The teams will play the finale of the Civil War series today at 3:05 p.m.
Harrison parked the first pitch he saw from Oregon starter David Peterson in the third inning over the left field fence. The three-run shot pushed his season RBI total to 43 and gave the Beavers a 4-2 lead they never relinquished.
That lead was backed by Oregon State reliever Bryce Fehmel. The freshman walked one and struck out six in 3 1/3 innings. He picked up his second save of the season with the effort.
Luke Heimlich started for the Beavers and scattered five hits and three runs over 5 2/3 innings. He picked up the win to improve to 6-3 on the year.
The Beavers finished with four hits, with three going for extra bases — Harrison’s home runs and a pair of doubles by Logan Ice and Michael Gretler. But Oregon State took advantage of four Oregon errors — the most by an opponent this season.
The Ducks committed two of their errors in the third and two in the seventh — OSU scored its runs in both innings.
Oregon jumped on the board first thanks to a two-run home run from Daniel Patzlaff. But the Beavers scored four in the third, an inning highlighted by Harrison’s ninth home run of the season. OSU’s first run of the frame came when Caleb Hamilton scurried home from second on an Oregon error.
The Ducks added a run in the fourth to make it a one-run game, but the Beavers pushed away with a two-run seventh. Oregon State took advantage of two Oregon errors in the inning, drawing two walks as well. The Beavers did not reach on a hit in the frame.
Peterson took the loss for the Ducks, dropping to 3-4 on the year. He worked 6 2/3 innings and allowed three hits and six runs, only three of which were earned. He walked five and struck out six.
