Raider netters claim two tourney wins

LA MIRADA, Calif. — Southern Oregon University's volleyball team improved to 3-1 at the Biola Summer Slam after straight-set victories Friday over Great Falls (Mont.) and ninth-ranked Vanguard (Calif.).

The 18th-ranked Raiders held UGF (1-3) to a flat .000 attacking average in a 25-15, 25-16, 25-8 win, and they posted 10 blocks against Vanguard (1-4) in a 25-19, 25-22, 26-24 win.

Senior setter Lauren McGowne had 29 assists, five digs, four blocks and three kills in helping the Raiders to a .329 attack, their best of the tourney, against UGF. Redshirt-freshman Taylor Ristvedt established a career-high with nine kills in the match, Nila Lukens had eight, and middles Courtney Macklin and Emma Gasman added seven and six, respectively.

Against Vanguard, Gasman (10 kills) and Macklin (nine kills) teamed up for 19 kills on 30 swings. The Raiders also got a combined 14 assisted blocks out of them and Ristvedt, who had six kills.

Lukens put down 10 more kills, and redshirt-sophomore Ariana Sattler had a breakout match with nine, including six clutch ones on nine swings in the clinching set. On the day, Sattler totaled 14 kills and just four attacking errors. McGowne set them up, registering 33 assists, seven digs and three blocks.

In the back row, Kiley Barcroft had 23 digs and Ashlyn Flynn contributed 16 on the day.

Speedway cancels

Racing at Southern Oregon Speedway set for today was canceled due to hot weather. Races were also called off Friday night.

The Rogue Valley experienced record-setting temperatures on Friday.

Racing action will resume next Saturday with sprint cars, pro stocks, IMCA sports mods, super 4's and OTRO hardtops. In addition, IMCA modifieds will be added.

Outlaw Kart racing will resume next Friday.
