Raiders end trip with loss to No. 16 Westmont

FULLERTON, Calif. — The Southern Oregon volleyball team got the competition it expected during its season-opening trip to Southern California, and no opponent was tougher than 16th-ranked Westmont (Calif.), which defeated the Raiders in straight sets Wednesday inside Hope International's Darling Pavilion.

The Warriors (5-0) attacked at a clip of .289, the second-highest for any team against SOU in the last two years, and had 13 blocks en route to the 25-18, 25-20, 25-14 sweep.

The 18th-ranked Raiders ended the trip with a record of 3-4, going 2-2 against NAIA top-25 foes. They'll be off until the Cascade Conference opener on Sept. 2 at Corban.

Emma Gasman's eight kills and three assisted blocks and Nila Lukens' seven kills highlighted SOU's efforts. Lauren McGowne was limited to 20 assists as the Raiders hit .029 as a team.

Westmont was led by Libby Dahlberg's 10 kills and Mila Maricic's eight blocks and five kills. The Warriors trailed 8-7 in the opening set but never again.

The meeting was the fifth nonleague match between the teams in the last six seasons. Westmont has won three of them.
