Witzel's goals lead Saint Martin's past SOU
LACEY, Wash. — Matching up with an NCAA Division II opponent for the first time, the Southern Oregon men's soccer team was competitive throughout its 2016 opener but couldn't get over the hump in a 3-2 loss at Saint Martin's on Sunday afternoon.
Kyle Witzel scored two goals for the Saints, who counted the contest as an exhibition. Witzel broke the ice in the 16th minute when he took McKray Kohn's pass from the corner and tapped it in, and he gave SMU the lead for good in the 55th minute on a rebound of his own miss that was deflected by SOU keeper Jonathan Morales.
The Raiders had tied the game at 1-1 less than a minute prior to Witzel's second goal when junior transfer Sean McManamon tallied his first score, which was set up by a slick pass from sophomore transfer Mitchell Pinney.
SMU's Will Eldred made it 3-1 in the 85th minute. Seventy-four seconds later, the Raiders cut into the lead on senior Dakota Scott's header. Kelly Gieber, a true freshman, was credited with the assist.
SOU only had one shot at tying it up, and it sailed wide. The Raiders totaled 10 shots with four on goal, and Saint Martin's had 11 with six on goal.
The Raiders are off until their home opener on Sept. 7 against George Fox.
