Loaded field set for Phil Knight invite

PORTLAND — The University of Oregon men’s basketball team will play in a loaded Phil Knight 80 Invitational next November.

The field is arguably the best of any holiday tournament ever assembled.

The 16-team tournament honors the Nike co-founder and 2012 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee in advance of his 80th birthday. It will run from Nov. 23-26, 2017, at the Moda Center and Memorial Coliseum.

The other participating schools are Arkansas, Butler, Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Portland, Portland State, Stanford and Texas.

“This will be one of the finest tournament fields ever assembled and it is an excellent way to celebrate Phil Knight,” said Oregon head coach Dana Altman. “He has done so much, not just for the University of Oregon, but all of college basketball. We are honored to be a part of the PK80 tournament.”

The schools involved have combined for 23 national championships and 85 Final Fours.

Two eight-team events — consisting of three games per team — will run simultaneously in the two buildings, with the crowning of two bracket champions. All games from Portland will be televised on ESPN networks.

Ticket information and the tournament bracket will be announced at a later date.

Other highlights of the field include more than 380 combined NCAA Championship appearances and more than 680 NCAA Championship wins. Ten of the 16 schools have won an NCAA title, nine of the past 13 national champions are in the field and 13 of the 16 schools have made at least one Final Four appearance.
