Beavers' Andersen signs extension through 2021
CORVALLIS — Oregon State coach Gary Andersen has signed a contract extension to coach the football team through the 2021 season.
Andersen just completed his second year at OSU and led the Beavers to a 4-8 season, with wins over Arizona and in the Civil War over Oregon in the final two games.
It was an improvement over Andersen's first season in which the program struggled with the transition and the Beavers ended up with two wins.
“We are excited about the direction of our program and the way our young men work to represent Beaver Nation the right way,” Andersen said. “We expect to continue to be much improved off and on the field, and I look forward to successful seasons ahead. Go Beavs!”
The Beavers put together three Pac-12 Conference victories, with a win over California in addition to the last two games of the season.
But the big moment came in the Civil War. The Beavers made a late push with a strong running game and pulled away for a 34-24 win.
It was the first win over Oregon since 2007.
“Extending coach Andersen’s contract reflects my belief that we have the coach in place who is capable of taking Beaver football to bowls and conference championships, and preparing our student-athletes to be champions in life beyond football,” OSU President Ed Ray said.
Andersen is entering his ninth season as a head coach at the Football Bowl Subdvision level after stints at Wisconsin and Utah State.
He has been a part of teams that have played in 11 bowl games.
During his tenure as a head coach, student-athletes have earned 149 league academic honors and 14 have been selected in the NFL draft.
The Beavers return to campus next month for the beginning of winter term and offseason workouts Jan. 9. The team resumes practices for the 2017 season in February with the annual spring game March 18 at Reser Stadium.
