DeLaCruz propels Rogues to victory

CHICO, Calif. — Johnny DeLaCruz supplied a three-run double to spark a first-inning surge and the Medford Rogues rode that wave to a nail-biting finish in securing a 5-4 triumph over the Chico Heat in Great West League baseball action Thursday night.

Medford (28-11) scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by DeLaCruz’s effort, and was up 5-2 in the fifth inning before Chico (22-18) rallied to make things interesting for the GWL leaders.

Four innings of scoreless relief by Scotty Wright and Taylor Frost, however, sealed the deal for the Rogues. Wright struck out five with no hits allowed in three innings, while Frost walked the first batter he faced in the bottom of the ninth before striking out the side to leave the potential tying run on base.

Clay Valenzuela-Reece, Davis Delorefice and Jake Hellweg had consecutive singles to open the game and, with one out, DeLaCruz doubled to clear the bases. Eric Yang followed with an RBI single to quickly make it 4-0.

At 4-2 in the fifth, Delorefice doubled and, after moving to third on a wild pitch, scored on a double by Alex Isola, who boosted his GWL lead in RBIs with his 41st of the summer.

Jaiden France picked up the pitching victory for Medford after allowing four runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout.

For the Rogues, Valenzuela-Reece finished 2-for-5 with one run, while Delorefice was 2-for-4 with two runs, Yang 2-for-4 and Jayden Hanna 3-for-4.
