Rogues pound out 20 hits in rout
Fittingly on “Bacon Night,” the Medford Rogues were sizzling at the plate Thursday.
Medford belted out 20 hits en route to a 19-5 victory over Yuba City at Harry & David Field that expanded its lead in the Great West League standings to two games over Lincoln and 4½ over Chico.
A pair of errors opened the door for the Rogues (31-14) to take a 2-0 lead through one inning and after the Bears (10-36) trimmed their deficit in half, Medford roared back with five more runs in the bottom mof the second to break away.
Josh Berman highlighted the outburst with his fourth home run of the summer — a solo shot to open the scoring — and the Rogues followed suit with RBI efforts by Alex Isola, Eric Yang, Johnny DeLaCruz and Jake Hellweg.
After Yuba City made it a 9-5 game through five innings, Medford put the game out of reach with a nine-run seventh inning that included a two-run single by Yang and two-run triple by Hellweg.
Jaiden France improved to 4-0 for the Rogues after allowing seven hits and five runs — three earned — over five innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Connor Konishi, Scotty Wright, Ryan Carle and Taylor Frost each pitched one scoreless inning of relief to nail down the victory.
Valenzuela-Reece finished 4-for-5 with three runs and one RBI, Isola was 4-for-5 with four runs and four RBIs, Yang 3-for-6 with two runs and four RBIs, Hellweg 3-for-4 with one run and four RBIs and Berman 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBIs after also drawing three walks.
The teams will return to Harry & David Field and continue the series at 6:35 tonight.
