Volpatti strikes twice to lift SOU over UC Merced
MERCED, Calif. — Southern Oregon's Mia Volpatti picked an opportune time to score the first two goals of her career, boosting the Raiders off the bench to a quality win in a 4-3 shootout at UC Merced on Saturday afternoon.
Volpatti, a redshirt sophomore playing not far from her hometown of Livermore, Calif., punched in the go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute to break a 3-3 tie, getting an assist from Trinity Rhoades that marked the first point of the freshman's career. The Raiders kept the Bobcats quiet the rest of the way to improve to 2-1 on the season.
After falling behind on an Ashley Bennett goal in the 14th minute, the Raiders scored the next three unanswered:Kelsey Randall assisted Aislinn Waite in the 23rd minute,Misty Martinez scored unassisted in the 33rd, and Martinez assisted Volpatti to make it 3-1 in the 34th.
Merced (0-2-1) — the defending Cal Pac champion which took eighth-ranked Northwest (Wash.) to double-overtime to start the season — cut the deficit in half 18 seconds before halftime on a D Covarrubias score set up by Jennifer Salinger. The Bobcats tied it in the 53rd when Elizabeth Cruz-Gomez struck unassisted.
SOU hadn't won a game in which an opponent scored at least three goals since defeating Corban, 5-3, on Oct. 5, 2013.
Martinez's goal and assist were also the first points of her career.
The Raiders out-shot the Bobcats, 15-12. SOU keeper Hannah Ceciliani collected five saves.
SOU is back in action at 11 a.m. Monday at William Jessup in Rocklin, Calif.
SOUTHERN OREGON 3, COLLEGE OF IDAHO 2: At Ashland, Southern Oregon erased a two-set deficit and handed 25th-ranked College of Idaho its first loss of the season by a score of 10-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-8 in Cascade Conference play at Mountain Avenue Gym.
Dani Johnson's 14 kills led a balanced attack for SOU (3-3, 1-1 CCC), but Ashlyn Flynn's 23 digs and Kylie Barcroft's 10 in the back line turned the match around after the Yotes (9-1, 1-1) embarrassed the Raiders by hitting .636 in the opening frame.
Taylor Alexander posted 16 kills, Brenna Meehan had 15 and Marija Djonovic distributed 57 assists for the Yotes, who were haunted by nine service errors to SOU's zero.
