Raiders sink William Jessup in 90th minute

ROCKLIN, Calif. — Playing for the third time in five days on another sweltering, hazy California afternoon, tacking an overtime period against William Jessup onto the end of its long road trip was not an ideal prospect for Southern Oregon. Thanks to Daisy Cervantes, the Raiders avoided it at the last possible minute.

With 48 seconds left in regulation, Cervantes controlled a pass from Yvonne Valencia on an advantage and bounced in a short shot near the left post to break a 1-1 tie. With four seconds left, Mia Volpatti's third goal of the trip accounted for the final 3-1 score.

Cervantes' goal was SOU's first game-winner tallied inside the final minute of regulation since a 4-3 win over Oregon Tech on Sept. 23, 2003.

It made the Raiders 3-1 overall going into matchups with two NCAA Division II opponents, Dixie State (Utah) and Sonoma State (Calif.), which will mark the end of their non-conference schedule Saturday and Sunday in Rohnert Park, Calif.

The Warriors fell to 0-4.

Kelsey Randall's first goal of the season, a centered shot fired to the right put, gave SOU the lead in the 10th minute. WJU's Yvette Perez came up with the equalizer with an assist from Marissa Sanders in the 34th.

Cervantes, a junior who this season was moved from defense to midfield, hadn't scored in two years. The assist was also Valencia's first since 2015.

Over the last two seasons, SOU is 6-0 against NAIA opponents in non-conference play.
