Hat tricks on display in SOU win

ASHLAND — Southern Oregon seemed to leave its goal-scoring woes behind with the start of Cascade Conference play, and Sunday's 9-0 win against Walla Walla (Wash.) at Raider Stadium did nothing to hurt the Raiders' confidence levels.

Travis Hopkins scored three straight goals in the first half,Carlos Magana scored three straight in the second, and Mitchell Pinney bookended the early-afternoon outburst with a pair of goals as the Raiders (4-5) stayed perfect at 4-0 in the CCC. It was the first time in team history that three players have scored multiple times in the same game, and Esteban Casteneda added his second goal of the season for the other.

The Wolves dipped to 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the CCC. They've been outscored 35-0 in conference action.

Kelly Gieber and Gonzalo Garcia had two assists apiece, bringing their team-high totals to three. Paul Matyas, Jared Delaney, Daniel Zamores and Andrew DePaepe were also credited with assists.

For Magana, an all-conference forward who was last year's CCC Newcomer of the Year but hadn't scored entering the day, the onslaught was a welcome sign. He scored in the 62nd, 63rd and 67th minutes — Hopkins also did all of his damage within a span of just over six minutes — for his second hat trick against the Wolves in as many meetings. He scored all three of his goals in the same half the first time around, too.

SOU out-shot the Wolves, 25-6. Wyatt Zabinski made three saves to ensure the Raiders' third shutout in four games.

SOU and fifth-ranked Corban stand as the CCC's only remaining unbeaten teams.

They'll meet next Saturday in Corban, but not before the Raiders make a stop in Eugene on Friday to face Northwest Christian.
