Beavers sweep Hartford
CORVALLIS — Adley Rutschman did it again Saturday night.
The sophomore drove home two with a double in the seventh inning to send the Oregon State baseball team to a 5-4 win over Hartford in the second game of a doubleheader at Goss Stadium.
The win sent the Beavers to a doubleheader sweep of the Hawks after Bryce Fehmel tossed a one-hit shutout in a 5-0 win earlier in the day.
The game-winning double was the second of the weekend for Rutschman, who drove in two from the right side of the batter's box on Friday. That also came in the seventh and sent OSU (11-0) to a 3-2 victory.
On Saturday, his double, on a 3-1 pitch, landed to the left of right fielder Ashton Bardzell, enabling Cadyn Grenier and Joe Casey to score.
Brandon Eisert, who threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, combined with Jake Mulholland, who tossed a perfect ninth, to finish off the Hawks (1-6). Eisert improved to 1-0 on the year while Mulholland picked up his third save.
In the first game, Fehmel allowed just one hit a single to left by Zachary Ardito in the fifth — en route to his third win of the season. Fehmel finished with four strikeouts and did not issue a walk — he hit a batter in the ninth and faced just two batters over the minimum.
Trevor Larnach doubled home two runs in the first, and Steven Kwan tallied two hits and three stolen bases to help pace the Beavers offensively.
Rutschman and Grenier both drove in runs in the win, with the latter's coming on a triple to the gap in right in the eighth to make it a 5-0 game.
FLORIDA ATLANTIC 5, OREGON 0: At Eugene, FAU scored four runs in the fourth inning and Oregon could never respond.
FAU (8-2) jumped on the Ducks in the fourth inning scoring four runs. After getting the leadoff batter to ground out, Oregon starter Cole Stringer (0-2) walked the next two hitters to set up the big inning. The Owls made Stringer pay with four straight hits following the walks. Cody Wilson, and Kevin Abraham each drove in one run, while Andru Summerall had a two-run double to give the Owls a 4-0 lead.
Tyler Frank added a solo home run off Nico Tellache in the eighth inning to make it 5-0. FAU starter Kyle Marman (3-0) struck out 11 while scattering eight hits over seven innings to pick up the win.
The Ducks (6-3) had plenty of opportunities to score. Oregon stranded 11 runners on base, including seven in scoring position. Of those seven, six came in the first five innings. UO stranded at least one runner in every inning except the seventh and the ninth.
Ray Soderman had his first career three-hit game, going 3-for-4. Spencer Steer went 2-for-3 and Gabe Matthews was 2-for-4.
