Oregon, Ryder to meet in NIT

EUGENE — Oregon was given a No. 3 seed to the 2018 National Invitation Tournament and will face sixth-seeded Rider Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the opening round at Matthew Knight Arena.

The Ducks went 22-11 in the regular season, including an 11-7 mark in Pac-12 games.

Rider, located in Lawrenceville, N.J., was the regular season champion of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference after going 22-9 overall and 15-3 in league play. This will be the first meeting between Oregon and Rider.

The Oregon-Rider winner will face either Marquette or Harvard on a yet-to-be-determined date between March 16-19. The semifinals are in New York on March 27, followed by the championship game March 29.

This will be Oregon's 11th NIT appearance, and first since 2012. The Ducks have reached the NIT Final Four in New York on three occasions: 1975, 1999 and 2004.

Oregon had been in the NCAA field for five straight seasons since losing to Washington in 2012.

Southern California, Notre Dame, Baylor and Saint Mary's are the No. 1 seeds for the NIT.

USC (23-11) finished second to Arizona in the Pac-12 this season and lost 75-61 to the Wildcats in the conference tournament final Saturday night, making the Trojans one of the most notable snubs for the NCAA Tournament field.

USC will play UNC Asheville on Tuesday night in its first appearance in the NIT since 1999.

Notre Dame takes on Hampton, Baylor plays Wagner and Saint Mary's faces Southeastern Louisiana in the first round. The Irish also had a strong case for a spot in the NCAA tourney after preseason All-American Bonzie Colson returned from a broken left foot.

Another notable matchup is Louisville hosting Northern Kentucky on Tuesday night.
