No. 3 Beavers rally past Ducks
EUGENE — Kevin Abel tossed 6 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Troy Claunch drove in two runs to pace third-ranked Oregon State over Oregon, 4-3, Tuesday night in a nonleague game at PK Park.
Trevor Larnach also hit his 13th home run of the season for the Beavers, who overcame a three-run first for the Ducks to win their 33rd game of the season. Oregon State improved to 33-7 on the year with its eighth straight victory over Oregon (21-21).
Abel came on in relief of starter Jordan Britton after Oregon went ahead 3-0 on a Kenyon Yovan home run. Abel retired the first seven batters he faced, holding the Ducks to just one hit in the longest outing of his career. Abel ended the night with four strikeouts and two walks, and picked up his third win of the year.
Claunch walked with the bases loaded in the second to pull the Beavers to within one and drove home the game-tying run two innings later with a line-drive double down the right-field line. He also shined defensively, throwing out runners attempting to steal in the fifth and sixth innings.
Steven Kwan, one batter after Claunch’s double, grounded out to short, bringing in Jack Anderson from third for the game-winning run.
Jake Mulholland picked up his Pac-12 Conference-leading 13th save of the season with 1 2/3 innings in relief of Abel. He retired all five batters he faces.
Oregon’s James Acuna took the loss to drop to 2-2 on the year. He allowed three hits and four runs in four innings.
The game marked the fourth of five between the teams during the 2017-18 Civil War series.
