COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Ristvedt powers Raiders to sweep
ROCKLIN, Calif. — Following the lead of Taylor Ristvedt’s left arm, No. 13-ranked Southern Oregon polished off a perfect stay at the William Jessup Invitational with two more sweeps Thursday of Pacific Union and host WJU at Warrior Arena.
Ristvedt, a junior right-side hitter, put down 10 kills in both victories — 25-13, 25-13, 25-16 against the Pioneers, and 25-20, 25-16, 25-12 against the Warriors — to make the Raiders 4-0 at the season-opening event. Ristvedt wrapped up the Invitational with 35 total kills, 29 of which were delivered before her first error, and hit at an eye-popping .541 average on 61 swings.
The Raiders hit .385 in the first match of the day and .307 in the second, eclipsing the .300 mark in four consecutive outings for the first time since 2009. Their four opponents hit a combined .012.
Ristvedt got to 10 kills on 13 swings in the opener, while middle Makayla Hoyt amassed seven kills and three blocks and Malie Rube totaled six kills on seven attacks. The Raiders opened up comfortable leads in every set, and Emma Ryan served them to 12 consecutive points to cap the second.
Ryan had four service aces during the run and a career-high five in the match to go with eight digs. Kiley Barcroft had nine digs, and Maddie Pernich was in on five of SOU’s eight blocks as the Pioneers dipped to a negative-.043 attacking average.
Ristvedt had three blocks with her 10 kills against William Jessup. Hoyt recorded eight kills and three blocks, and Pernich converted eight of her 12 attacks without an error. Natalie James spread out 18 assists while collecting nine digs, while Ryan and Barcroft added 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Pacific Union dropped to 0-2 and William Jessup to 3-2.
The Raiders will next be in action at the first contest ever played inside Lithia Motors Pavilion, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. against Lewis-Clark State (Idaho). It’ll kick off a three-day tournament, which will also see SOU play Aug. 25 against William Jessup and Aug. 26 against Simpson (Calif.).
