SOU men jumps to No. 19
Southern Oregon jumped to No. 19 in Tuesday’s NAIA Top 25 men’s soccer coaches’ poll, marking a five-spot improvement over last week’s edition.
Along with the first-place Raiders (12-2-1 overall, 9-0-1 Cascade Conference), Corban (11-1-1, 8-0-1) also went up five spots to No. 10. Their spikes were the result of Corban’s 2-0 win Friday at Rocky Mountain (11-3, 7-2), which had previously lost by the same score against SOU and dropped from 11th to 22nd in the poll.
SOU secured two more shutouts over the weekend, 5-0 over Northwest (Wash.) and 1-0 over Evergreen (Wash.). Over their last 13 games, the only one the Raiders failed to win was a 0-0 tie against Corban.
They’d never appeared in the NAIA Top 25 prior to last week. This Saturday, they’ll play their final home game at 4 p.m. against Oregon Tech (6-6-2, 5-4-1).
Ashland High School 2013 graduate Connor Kaegi was named the NAIA Football Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, two days after racking up 352 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns while leading the 22nd-ranked Ottawa (Kan.) Braves to a 52-24 victory over McPherson.
The 6-foot-7, 225 senior quarterback completed 23 of 32 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for 83 yards and three more scores for the Braves, who improved to 6-1 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Kaegi, who transferred to Ottawa from Arizona Western College, has passed for 1,251 yards and 14 touchdowns and ran for 275 yards and eight touchdowns in five games this season. His breakout campaign includes a last-second 14-yard touchdown pass against Sterling (Kan.) Oct. 6 that gave Ottawa a 48-47 victory.
