SOU jumps to No. 14 in Top 25
The Southern Oregon men’s soccer team made a five-spot improvement for the second week in a row in the NAIA Top 25 coaches’ poll, settling in at No. 14 in Tuesday’s rankings.
For the first time this season, the Raiders (13-2-1 overall, 10-0-1 Cascade Conference) are the highest-ranked team in the CCC. Corban (12-2-1, 9-1-1) went from 10th to 16th as the result of a 2-1 loss at Eastern Oregon, and Rocky Mountain (12-4-0, 8-3-0) went from 22nd to out of the poll after getting upset 2-0 at Warner Pacific.
Going into the final weekend of the regular season – Friday at Providence (7-5-2, 6-3-2) and Sunday at Carroll (6-6-1, 5-5-1) – SOU needs three points to clinch a share of the title and four to win it outright.
PRESEASON TOP 25: The Southern Oregon University basketball teams will both start the season in their respective NAIA Division II Top 25 coaches’ polls, the women at No. 12 and the men at No. 22 according to the preseason editions that were released Tuesday.
The Raider women, coming off a 28-5 season, are ranked in the preseason for the fifth year in a row and seeking a fifth consecutive national tournament appearance. They were picked to finish second in the Cascade Conference behind defending champion Eastern Oregon, which is the only other ranked CCC team at No. 7. Oregon Tech is the first team out of the Top 25 in the receiving-votes category.
The Raider men return 12 players who were part of last year’s 20-12 campaign, the team’s fifth 20-win season in six years. They’ve been picked third in the CCC preseason poll behind third-ranked College of Idaho and 12th-ranked Oregon Tech. Warner Pacific is the circuit’s fourth ranked squad at No. 23.
Both teams open play next week – the men on Tuesday at New Hope Christian, and the women on Nov. 2 in an exhibition at Humboldt State (Calif.).
