Waite goal gives SOU big soccer win
TURLOCK, Calif. — Aislinn Waite rewarded Southern Oregon keeper Jessie Selby’s 14-save effort by converting a penalty kick in the 84th minute to give the Raiders their first win against NCAA Division II competition since 2012, 1-0 over Sonoma State (Calif.) on Saturday.
The matchup was decided after Waite was taken out on a slide tackle from behind. The goal was the second of her senior season, and she’s recorded a point in four of SOU’s five games.
SOU is 3-2.
Selby’s save total was the highest in a single game for any Raider since 2006. The sophomore helped the Raiders win on a day when they were out-shot a staggering 32-4 and put only one shot besides Waite’s on goal. In her most recent start, Selby blanked 11th-ranked Vanguard (Calif.) with seven saves.
Sonoma State is a (1-1) is an NCAA Div. II team that finished No. 6 in the West regional rankings last year.
RCC 3, NORTH IDAHO 3: Rogue Community College gave up two goals in the first 30 minutes before rallying.
The Ospreys (0-4-1) mustered three first-half shots and were down 2-0 at halftime.
In the second half, RCC’s Christian Hendrix picked up her third goal of the year off a corner kick in the 72nd minute.
After North Idaho went up 3-1, the Ospreys responded with goals in the 77th and 80th minutes. Both were long distance rainbow shots that cleared the keeper. The first was by Liliana Mejia and the second was by Faith Aurello. Taylor Marshall assisted on each.
RCC 2, NORTH IDAHO 0: Rogue Community College (2-1-2) broke a scoreless tie in the second half.
RCC’s Bryan Garcia collected the ball on a corner kick and put it into the net in the 53rd minute for a 1-0 lead. The match stayed close until Luis Cerna crossed the ball and found Julian Jackson, who scored in the 87th.
