EOU favored, SOU fourth in women's hoops poll
The Southern Oregon women’s basketball team picked up one first-place vote and landed at No. 4 in the Cascade Conference preseason coaches’ poll, which was released Tuesday by the league office.
Eastern Oregon, which has won at least a share of the last three CCC championships, was chosen as the favorite with seven first-place votes. Corban got the other three and was picked second, while Oregon Tech, which tied for second place with Corban in 2018-19, was picked third.
The Raiders are coming off a 16-11 season in which they finished fourth in the CCC standings with a 12-8 record. Banged up down the stretch, they dropped their last six games and were eliminated in the CCC Tournament quarterfinal round by College of Idaho.
Entering his fifth season, SOU head coach Alex Carlson has three starters and nine total players back as he attempts to bring the Raiders to the NAIA Division II National Tournament for the fourth time. The group is headlined by junior forward Syd Fryer, who averaged 11.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals on her way to All-CCC honorable mention plaudits, and senior point guard Daranda Hinkey, who posted 10.9 points and 3.1 assists per outing.
Carlson’s six-person recruiting class included five freshmen and one transfer.
EOU graduated NAIA Player of the Year Maya Ah You Dias but returned 12 others from a team that went 19-1 in the CCC.
The Raiders will play their first counter of the season at Lithia Motors Pavilion, Nov. 6 against Simpson (Calif.).
