SOU trio honored by conference
Southern Oregon University’s Lauren Quirke, Gabby Sandoval and Macie Stewart have been voted Cascade Conference Red Lion athletes of the week, the CCC office announced Monday.
Quirke and Sandoval earned the positional and pitching awards for the SOU softball team, which last week swept a doubleheader at 11th-ranked Hope International (Calif.) before going 5-1 at the TCS NAIA SoCal Classic, improving to 10-2 overall.
Over the eight-game stretch, Quirke batted .586 (17-for-29) with four doubles, a triple, a home run, 11 RBIs and nine runs scored. When she wasn’t playing third base, she allowed three runs in eight innings pitched over two starts, including a five-hit, five-inning shutout against San Diego Christian.
Sandoval went 3-0 with a save and a 2.66 ERA over 23 2/3 innings on the week. The senior improved to 5-0 on the season and is up to 82 career wins, just two away from the conference’s all-time record.
Stewart was voted the CCC women’s wrestler of the week after a second-place showing in the 109-pound bracket at the McKendree (Ill.) Bearcat Invitational for the fourth-ranked Raiders on Saturday. The freshman opened the tournament with three straight first-round pins that took a combined 3 minutes 5 seconds to advance to the championship match.
The top-ranked SOU softball team will play a twin bill Friday at William Jessup (Calif.). The Raider women wrestlers will be at Menlo (Calif.) on Feb. 17 before finishing their dual schedule at home Feb. 20 against Umpqua C.C.
