SOU sweeps Jessup, goes 4-0 in opening weekend

LINCOLN, Calif. — The No. 1-ranked Southern Oregon softball team completed a perfect opening weekend Saturday with a sweep of William Jessup (Calif.), winning by scores of 4-1 and 7-4 at Wilson Field.

A day after throwing her first no-hitter, Raider ace Gabby Sandoval took over the No. 11 spot on the NAIA's all-time pitcher wins list with a four-hitter in the opener. The senior bumped her career record to 92-17 in winning her 16th decision in a row, striking out six Warriors with two walks and bringing a shutout into the sixth.

The Raiders (4-0) never trailed in either game. Lauren Quirke, following up on Friday's six-RBI game at Simpson, knocked in their first two against WJU (2-2) to give Sandoval all the support she needed. SOU scored three in the fifth thanks to run-scoring singles from Tayler Walker and Rylan Austin.

Walker had a three-hit game and went 4-for-6 with a triple and two runs scored on the afternoon. Katrina Winterburn went 2-for-3 with a double in Game 1, and Hannah Shimek and Allie Stines stroked two hits in each game.

Tied 2-2 in the fifth of Game 2, Shimek and Stines set up a three-run frame with back-to-back singles. A wild pitch, a Riley Donovan single and Taelor Mayben's sacrifice fly quickly put SOU up 5-2. The RBI was Mayben's second of the contest.

Quirke got her second win in the circle in as many days and was charged with four runs over six innings. Hannah Stark came on to earn the save after Quirke allowed a leadoff baserunner in the seventh.

SOU totaled 23 hits to WJU's 12 combined in the doubleheader.

The Raiders are scheduled to play two games apiece against Simpson and William Jessup again next Saturday and Sunday, with all games held in Redding, Calif.

Going back to last season, they've won 17 in a row.
