Raiders' Goggin, Quirke land honors
ASHLAND — Southern Oregon University hurdler Bryce Goggin and softball player Lauren Quirke have been voted Cascade Conference athletes of the week, the league office announced.
Goggin, a two-sport junior from Eugene, was named the CCC track athlete of the week. In his first race since 2019, he ran the 110-meter hurdles in 14.73 seconds last Thursday at Raider Stadium.
The time — which was easily a personal best — made him an automatic qualifier for the NAIA Outdoor Championships by a margin of two-hundredths of a second. It also put him at No. 6 on the NAIA performance list.
Quirke, a senior from San Mateo, California, was named the CCC softball pitcher of the week after adding to her outstanding string of outings against Warner Pacific.
She threw a seven-inning, two-hit shutout Thursday with a career-high 13 strikeouts, then allowed one hit and no earned runs in five innings of relief with seven strikeouts Friday.
Quirke has pitched 36 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run over her last six outings, bringing her one inning away from the SOU record. Over that span she’s given up just 10 hits and dropped her ERA to 1.71, the third-best in the conference.
At the same time, she’s batting .494, which ranks fourth in the CCC among individuals with at least 50 at-bats.
The Raider track team hosts another meet this Thursday and Friday.
The top-ranked Raider softball team will take its 23-1 overall and 9-0 CCC record to seventh-ranked Oregon Tech, which is one game behind in the standings, for a four-game series Friday and Saturday
