SOU’s Daniel hits qualifying time for NAIA

ASHLAND — Already a seven-time NAIA All-American, Southern Oregon senior Arianna Daniel needed only one crack at the 400-meter race to ensure she’ll be back at the national meet for more.

Daniel ran the 400 in 56.39 seconds in her first try of the season Thursday at Raider Stadium, clearing the NAIA ‘A’ standard of 56.90 and winning among a 13-person field.

Daniel, who last week turned in the Cascade Conference’s fastest 200 time (24.98) of the young season, is the third individual to automatically qualify for the 400 at the NAIA outdoor championships.

Daniel was one of four Raiders to qualify for the CCC championships in the race, pacing runner-up Baylee Touey (59.39), third-place Lindsey Bonney (1:00.50) and fifth-place Savannah Greenwade (1:00.82).

On the men’s side, Owen Cuilty won the 400-meter hurdles in 57.19 seconds, while in the 400 Shane McLaughlin was runner-up in 51.51 and Chris Rosero third in 51.84.

In the field, Adam O’Brien took second in the men’s pole vault by clearing 15 feet, 1¾ inches. In the women’s shot put, Sarah Johnston was second (36-7¾) and KiAshe Hobby third (36-2).

The small meet continues today. The multi-events are ongoing, with Camdyn Bruner leading the heptathlon at 2,343 points through four disciplines, and Solomon Tinnon leading the decathlon with 3,182 points through five disciplines.

THOMPSON-SIPOREN DONE: Former Ashland High athlete Wyatt Thompson-Siporen will forego his final season of outdoor track at Montana State University because of a knee injury.

Thompson-Siporen, a 2015 Ashland graduate who transferred to MSU in January 2018, is a six-time top-two finisher in the Big Sky Conference indoor and outdoor championships in the pole vault and multi events. He also finished fourth in the indoor pole vault in 2020.

His bests are 16-9 1/4 in the pole vault, 7,132 points in the decathlon and 5,229 points in the heptathlon.

At MSU, he ranks third all time in the indoor pole vault, fourth in the heptathlon, seventh in the decathlon and 10th in the outdoor pole vault.
