Corban ends SOU’s home winning streak
ASHLAND — Juliana Pires and Mei Suetsugu teamed up to help Corban break through with two second-half goals and stay on top of the Cascade Conference West Division standings with a 2-0 win over Southern Oregon on Monday at Raider Stadium.
The outcome ended SOU’s four-game home winning streak.
In the 53rd minute, Suetsugu gave the Warriors (8-2 overall, 8-1 CCC) the lead by buzzing in a 20-yard free kick that she lined up with the left post and directed just inside the right one for her fifth goal of the season. The opportunity was made possible by Pires, whose shot attempt moments earlier went off the hand of a Raider defender.
In the 64th minute, Suetsugu’s through ball from midfield found Pires on an advantage, and she capitalized with her sixth goal.
The Warriors started the day tied with Oregon Tech for the division lead. The winner will get an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
The regular season ends Tuesday, with Corban meeting SOU again at noon and Oregon Tech playing at Northwest (Wash.).
The Raiders (4-4-1) were shut out for the third game in a row. They had their best chances in the second half, when Corban keeper Devan Archer made three of her four saves, including a diving stop of Kiani Pandoliano’s free kick in the 79th minute.
Pandoliani had two of SOU’s four shots on goal.
