Medford’s Melton earns Pac-12 honorable mention
Oregon State infielder/outfielder Jacob Melton, a sophomore from South Medford, received honorable mention in Pac-12 Conference baseball all-star voting by the conference coaches, it was announced Thursday.
Melton ended the season batting .404 with five doubles, three triples, six home runs, 25 RBI and eight stolen bases.
He hit safely in 21 of the 32 games he played in, and he became the first Beaver with three home runs in the same game since 2001.
He was one of a number of Oregon and Oregon State players honored.
Oregon’s Aaron Zavala was player of the year, the first Duck to claim the conference honor.
He’s also one of five Ducks on the Pac-12 first team and one of eight to earn conference accolades. Two Ducks were also named to the all-defensive team.
Other Oregon players on the all-conference team are starting pitcher Robert Ahlstrom, closer Kolby Somers, designated hitter Kenyon Yovan and first baseman Gabe Matthews.
Starting pitcher Cullen Kafka, shortstop Josh Kasevich and outfielder Tanner Smith received honorable mention, while Ahlstrom and Matthews were named to the defensive team.
For Oregon State, catcher Troy Claunch, left-handed pitcher Jake Mulholland and right-handed pitcher Will Frisch were first team.
Right-handed pitchers Kevin Abel and Bryant Salgado received honorable mention.
