SOU fifth-year wrestler Roberson dies at 23

Cause of death remains under investigation

ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon University athletic department announced Monday the tragic loss of Hunter Roberson, a member of the Raider men’s wrestling team, who passed away unexpectedly Sunday morning. He was 23.

Roberson came to SOU from Vista, California, upon graduating from Rancho Buena Vista High in 2017. He wrestled primarily at 149 pounds for the Raiders and was looking forward to returning for a fifth season in 2021-22 while working on a degree in health and physical education.

Statewide restrictions wiped out a majority of the Raiders’ 2020-21 schedule.

The cause of his death is under investigation.

“We are heartbroken by the news that student-athlete Hunter Roberson passed away early Sunday morning,” SOU Athletic Director Matt Sayre said. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends, teammates and coaches. Hunter was a senior member of our wrestling team and a positive, energetic presence for our program. SOU and Raider athletics will miss him dearly and are thankful for the time he spent with us. We urge the Raider community to keep Hunter and his family in your thoughts.”

Memorial details will be shared when they are finalized.
