SOU’s Van Well named CCC’s top freshman
ASHLAND — Following a dominant debut season, Southern Oregon’s Hailey Van Well has been named the Cascade Conference Freshman of the Year, the CCC office announced Thursday.
The outside hitter from Dallas, Ore., also represented the Raiders on the All-CCC first team, as voted on by the conference’s head coaches. SOU sophomore right-side hitter Simone Gordon garnered honorable mention.
Van Well and Gordon flourished while carrying the attack of one of the youngest SOU rosters in recent memory. The Raiders finished their season last week at 14-13.
Among all players in the conference, Van Well ranked third in kills per set at 3.6 and eighth in attacking average at .280. Only one other individual finished among the top-eight in both categories: Corban’s CCC Player of the Year, Avari Ridgway.
After waiting a year to make her collegiate debut as SOU opted out of the modified 2020 season, Van Well recorded 10 kills or more on 20 occasions. She went for a season-high 23 on Sept. 10 against Northwest (Wash.). Her final kills-per-set average was the highest for a Raider freshman since Josh Rohlfing took over as head coach in 2007.
Gordon, who transferred to SOU in 2020, posted 2.5 kills per set on a .224 average. Her kills average increased to 2.7 during conference play. She added 0.6 blocks.
