Raiders complete series shutout of Providence
CALDWELL, Idaho — The Southern Oregon softball team posted four straight shutouts for the first time ever in a Cascade Conference series, tacking on the last two Sunday as it completed a sweep of Providence (Mont.) by scores of 13-0 in seven innings and 11-0 in five at Symms Field.
The sixth-ranked Raiders outscored the winless Argos 44-0 and out-hit them 47-18 over the weekend. Sophomore pitcher Katie Machado blanked them for the second time in Sunday’s opener with a six-hitter in which she struck out six. Phelicity Fa’aita threw all five frames while scattering three singles and helping herself with a three-run home run in the non-conference finale.
SOU moved to 19-5 overall and 5-1 in the CCC, while the Argos dropped to 0-12 and 0-9. They’ve accumulated 12 runs this year.
The Raider lineup feasted with 13 extra-base hits on the day, led by freshman shortstop Sammie Pemberton’s three doubles.
In Game 1, run-scoring doubles from Sarah Kerling and Pemberton in the fourth and fifth innings staked the Raiders to a 6-0 lead before they threw up a seven-spot in the seventh.
Pemberton went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Kerling went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs, and Erika Marquez was 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Deja Acosta added a double, two runs and two RBIs, and Rylan Austin went 3-for-4 with a double.
Game 2 was more of the same early, as Pemberton’s two-run double and Fa’aita’s second homer of the season had the Raiders up 5-0 in the first. They scored five more in the second on three more RBI doubles from Austin, Pemberton and Riley Donvoan.
Pemberton tallied four RBIs and Donovan had two hits, a walk, three runs scored and an RBI.
Machado’s effort, which marked her fourth shutout, made her 8-2. Fa’aita improved to 4-1.
The Raiders return home next Saturday and Sunday to play a four-game series against Eastern Oregon. The Mountaineers will enter the series at 16-5 overall and 6-0 in the CCC.
