Pitching dominates as SOU sweeps EOU
ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon University softball team’s pitching staff continued its remarkable run while mowing down Eastern Oregon for another Cascade Conference series win Monday at University Field.
The Raiders won three out of four in the set, defeating the Mountaineers 6-1 and 8-0 on Day 2. The only run on pitcher Cayla Williams’ ledger was unearned as she twirled a four-hit complete game in the opener. Phelicity Fa’aita turned in a two-hitter and Riley Donovan launched her league-leading eighth home run in the five-inning, non-conference finale.
Sixth-ranked SOU (22-6 overall, 7-2 CCC) has surrendered just one earned run over its last 49 innings entering Wednesday’s 2 p.m. home doubleheader against top-ranked Oregon Tech.
The Mountaineers (17-8, 7-2) batted .159 in the series, mustering two runs and 14 hits — all singles — in 25 innings.
In Game 1, Williams bumped her record to 7-0 with seven strikeouts, three walks and 11 induced groundouts. Deja Acosta went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Ashton Cathey drove in the first two runs of the game with a triple in the first and a squeeze bunt in the third. Williams, Sarah Kerling and Piper Love had two hits apiece.
Williams finished the series 9-for-13 with a homer and a double at the plate, and 12 innings with no earned runs allowed in the circle.
The junior went 2-for-3 in Game 2, but Donovan started the fireworks with a towering solo shot over the fence in center field in the first. Kerling’s RBI single in the second and Fa’aita’s sacrifice fly in the third put the Raiders up 3-0.
The Raiders scored four more in the fourth, where Cathey stroked an RBI single and Fa’aita’s hit brought home two.
Acosta, Kerling and Williams had four hits apiece on the day. Acosta and Kerling also accounted for six of the team’s 10 stolen bases.
Fa’aita brought her record to 5-1. She struck out five and walked four in her second shutout of the season.
