RAIDER ROUNDUP: SOU rolls to pair of wins over Bushnell

EUGENE — The No. 8-ranked Southern Oregon University softball team continued to showcase its power while sweeping Bushnell by scores of 11-2 in six innings and 9-0 in five in a Cascade Conference doubleheader Friday at Rich Schwab Field.

Cayla Williams homered and didn’t allow an earned run during a complete game five-hitter in Game 1, while Lindsey Stripling went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Riley Donovan hit two bombs in support of Katie Machado’s two-hit shutout in Game 2, pushing the Raiders to 25-7 overall and 10-3 in the CCC.

Donovan’s home runs gave her 10 on the season, making her the third player in the NAIA to reach double figures this season. She also roped a pair of doubles on the day, finishing 5-for-7 with five RBIs and four runs scored.

Williams homered for the third straight game, bringing her total to five, and improved to 8-1 in the circle. Machado, who struck out seven over five frames, brought her record to 9-3.

The Raiders have accumulated 10 home runs in their past seven games and 28 on the season. They’re two away from equaling the team’s 2021 total and jumped to No. 4 on the national leaderboard.

Their latest victims, the Beacons, dropped to 6-18 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

SOU got busy with five runs in the first inning of the opener, a rally capped by Piper Love’s two-run triple. Donovan and Rylan Austin preceded that shot with RBI singles.

The Raiders tacked on their other six runs in the sixth, where Williams hit a two-run homer, Stripling cleared the bases with a three-run double, and Sarah Kerling drove in another with a single.

Donovan launched a solo home run in the first inning of Game 2, an RBI double in the second, and a two-run homer in the third. Erika Marquez tripled, scored a run and drove in another in the effort.
