Pistole gets 300th win at SOU in Raiders’ sweep

SPRINGFIELD — The Southern Oregon University softball team made head coach Jessica Pistole the Raiders’ first 300-game winner with an 11-3 Cascade Conference win over Bushnell, then completed a four-game sweep of the Beacons in a 13-4 nonleague decision Saturday at Rich Schwab Field.

The No. 8-ranked Raiders logged 29 hits on the day, bumping their record to 27-7 overall and 11-3 in the CCC. Pistole, in her seventh season at SOU, improved to 301-95 as a Raider, bringing her winning percentage to .760. The two-time national champion owns 423 victories overall as a head coach.

Junior second baseman Deja Acosta went 6-for-8 with six runs scored on the day, giving her eight hits, eight runs and four stolen bases in the series. Riley Donovan tallied five hits with a triple, two doubles and six RBIs, and finished 10-for-15 with seven extra-base hits and 11 RBIs overall against the Beacons.

Phelicity Fa’aita pitched a five-inning complete game for the win in Game 1 and ripped her fifth home run in Game 2. She was working with a five-run lead by the second inning, and the Raiders provided her with six more in the fourth. Sarah Kerling tripled and Ashton Cathey doubled as seven different Raiders drove runs in.

Katie Machado got the win with 3 1/3 innings of relief in the finale, secured by Cayla Williams’ seven-out save. Acosta went 4-for-5 with four runs and Donovan went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs. Fa’aita hit a two-run shot in the sixth inning and Cathey followed with a solo homer in the seventh.

Williams singled and doubled to finish the series 7-for-11 with five RBIs and four runs scored.

The Raiders have won 13 of their last 15 overall. During that stretch, they’ve ended nine games early with the eight-run rule.
