Raiders complete CCC sweep of Yotes

CALDWELL, Idaho — Southern Oregon University put No. 7-ranked College of Idaho squarely on the wrong side of a statement weekend at Symms Field, completing a three-game Cascade Conference sweep of the Yotes in an 8-3 decision Saturday afternoon.

Ashton Cathey and Cayla Williams both homered during Williams’ complete game, which made her 14-2 on the season. SOU scored two runs in four different innings, slugging five extra-base hits and 13 total.

The 10th-ranked Raiders (41-10 overall, 21-6 CCC), who extended their winning streak to 12 games, overtook the Yotes (35-11, 20-7) in the standings and are now just one game behind Eastern Oregon and Oregon Tech entering the final week of the regular season. EOU completed a stunning three-game sweep of OIT on Saturday in La Grande to force a first-place tie.

The sweep was a major boost to SOU’s NAIA World Series Opening Round hosting case. The national office will announce the 10 hosts Wednesday.

The Raiders finish the regular season at home next Friday and Saturday against Corban.

Williams allowed just five hits over seven frames. Haley Loffer’s solo homer accounted for the Yotes’ only offense through the first four. At the plate, Williams went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, hitting a two-run shot that accounted for SOU’s final score in the sixth.

Cathey was 3-for-3 and got the Raiders started with an RBI single in the first inning that preceded Piper Love’s bases-loaded walk. In the third, Phelicity Fa’aita hit an RBI double and Love made it 4-1 with a bunt single.

Love and Lindsey Stripling had two hits apiece. The multi-hit outing was Stripling’s third of the series.

The Yotes, who returned nearly all of their key players after SOU knocked them out of the NAIA World Series last year, had been ranked ahead of the Raiders all season. They finished 0-6 combined in CCC play against SOU and OIT.
