Krystal Carter woke up in the lobby of the Ashland Police Department this morning.

It wasn&

t where she planned to spend the night, but she was pleased with the accomodations all the same.

A resident of Yreka who doesn&

t drive, Carter came to Ashland to fill a pain medicine prescription. When she was unable to hitch a ride back home Tuesday night, she called the Ashland police.

As a transsexual female, Carter said being on the road at night isn&

t always the safest place for her, noting that on several occasions she has experienced unwanted sexual advances while hitchhiking.

Officer Matt Caswell responded to Carter&

s call and, recognizing her predicament, came up with a solution.

&

He said there were several shelters in Medford, but it&

s not really safe to hitchhike there at night,&

she said. &

So he let me stay in the lobby of the police department to stay warm.&

She said while she was there, police provided her with a Wendy&

s hamburger and some chicken nuggets because she hadn&

t had the opportunity to get anything to eat.

&

It sure makes me feel good when a police officer goes out of his way to help someone,&

she said, in a letter she wrote to Chief Mike Bianca during her stay. &

I was comfortable and warm all night. Officer Caswell&

s actions proved the meaning of &

145;protect and serve.&

&

Ashland Police Chief Mike Bianca said of the situation, &

That was compassionate policing, even better than community policing. It was problem solving. That person had a problem and we solved it. Our lobby is open 24 hours, and has access to a bathroom and it was a good idea on the part of the officer to offer her a place to weather out the night hours.&
