Armed man threatened to kill two at Emigrant Lake
An intoxicated Jacksonville man pointed a gun at two people walking by his recreational vehicle at the Emigrant Lake campground and threatened to kill them on Sunday afternoon, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
Stephen Barnes, 53, was arrested on two counts of menacing and pointing a firearm at another, and was booked at the Jackson County Jail. His bail is set at $16,000.
Before sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene a Jackson County Parks employee was able to "talk Barnes into putting his firearm away," according to Sgt. Rick Kennedy with the Sheriff's Department. That employee, whose name has not been released, could not immediately be reached for comment.
Barnes pointed his .45-caliber handgun at Gary Roach, 39, and Krystal Brock, 21, "threatening to kill them" as they walked through the campground at about 3:53 p.m., Kennedy said in a release. Roach and Brock, who were about 20 feet away from Barnes' RV at the time, were unharmed in the incident, according to authorities.
During the investigation by sheriff's deputies, Roach became disorderly and harassed Barnes, according to officials. He was cited for harassment and released.
It is unclear whether Barnes knew Roach and Brock. Sheriff's officials did not immediately return calls seeking more information.
