Rory Dwyer of Ashland's Southern Oregon Fencing Center won the gold medal in both the foil and epee events at the Pacific Coast Championships last weekend in Pasadena, Calif.

The event was sanctioned by the United States Fencing Association and included competitors from Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah.

Dwyer, 10, got off to a slow start by placing 14th place in foil preliminary pools but still advanced to the round of 16 elimination format. He then went undefeated to claim the title.

He then entered the epee competition only after his parents bought one epee and borrowed another. He again went undefeated in the elimination round.


The Kids Unlimited sixth-grade girls basketball team won the championship of Vancouver, Wash., AAU tournament recently, beating Southridge for the title.

Kids Unlimited went undefeated in pool play.

The tournament featured teams from Oregon and Washington in grades 6 through 8. The seventh-grade Kids Unlimited team topped Salem-Keizer for third place.


Jerry Richardson rolled a 138 triplicate on March 9 in the GoodSports League at Lava Lanes.

Joe Guider shot a 160 triplicate at Lava Lanes March 13 in the Tuesday Nighters League.
