Several fighters advance at Region 12 Championships
CENTRAL POINT — A handful of amateur fighters moved on to tonight's finals with victories on Friday in the Region 12 Boxing Championships held at the Jackson County Expo.
In the lone championship bout of the night, David Lopez of Parma, Idaho, won a 3-2 split decision over John Peak of Tacoma, Wash.
In semifinal action, Manuel Ortega (Linwood, Wash.) stopped Tate Noble in the 125 weight class. Ortega will move on to face Medford Bulldog Boxing Club member Troy Wohosky tonight.
In other semifinal bouts, Joe Colunga (Linwood, Wash.) scored a 4-1 decision over Jerry Lefries (Spokane, Wash.) at 132; Matt Flores (Twin Falls, Idaho) recorded a 3-2 split decision over Juan Ulloa (Redmond) at 141; Michael Gaveronski (North Bend, Wash.) took out Jeremy Chan (Bend), 5-0, at 165; and Shane Duchet (Seattle) scored a fourth-round stoppage of Josh Gomez (White City) at 178.
The four-round championship bouts will take place tonight starting at 7. Highlighting the 10-bout card will be a heavyweight matchup between two-time national champion Mike Wilson, a Central Point native, and defending U.S. champion Jonte Willis.
